Legal project management software breaks a matter into phases and tasks, assigns each task to a person with a due date, and shows the firm what is done, what is late and who is overloaded. It replaces the spreadsheet or email chain that usually tracks who is responsible for what.
For litigation it tracks the steps between pleadings and trial; for transactional work it tracks the closing checklist. In both cases the value is the same: one list of responsibilities, visible to everyone on the matter.
In LawAOS the unit is the workstream: a board or list of tasks inside a matter, with owners, priorities, due dates, child tasks and saved views. Matter templates and workstream templates set up the same structure each time, and automations create tasks or notify people when records change.
- One owner per task
- Every task has an assignee, a status and a due date, so a status meeting starts from the board instead of from memory.
- Child tasks for real sub-work
- Large tasks split into child tasks with their own owners, and the parent shows progress.
- Saved views
- Save a filtered view such as my overdue tasks or everything due this week on a litigation matter, and return to it with one click.
- Workload across the team
- The dashboard shows open work by member and team workload, so a supervising partner can see who has capacity before assigning.
A matter template holds stages, workstreams, starter tasks, folders and documents. Launching it on a new matter creates the same structure every time, so a new associate on a litigation matter sees the same phases as the partner who designed the template.
Workstream templates do the same for a single stream of work, such as discovery or a closing checklist. Templates keep version history and a launch history, and a launch that is interrupted can be resumed.
Automations run on record changes: when a matter opens, a docket entry is filed, an intake arrives or a task changes status. Each rule can create a task, notify people, send a branded email or update a field. That covers common assignment steps, such as creating the engagement-letter task on matter opening or the preparation task when a hearing is scheduled.
Automations do not have delays or branching, so multi-step logic is written as several rules on the same trigger.
Open the matter from a template
Launch a firm matter template to create the stages, workstreams, starter tasks and folders in one step.
See the moduleAssign the work
Give each task an owner, due date and priority, and break large tasks into child tasks.
See the moduleTrack deadlines alongside tasks
Court dates and calculated deadlines sit on the docket, and an automation can turn a new docket entry into a task.
See the moduleAutomate the handoffs
Rules create tasks and send notifications when matters, documents, invoices or docket entries change.
See the moduleReview workload
Saved views and the dashboard's open-work and team-workload widgets show where work is late or piling up.

- Automations have four actions only (create a task, notify, send a branded email, update a field) with no delays or branching.
- LawAOS does not ship pre-built matter or workstream templates; the firm builds its own.
- LawAOS does not connect to Slack or Zapier.
