Alternatives: LawPay

LawPay processes payments. LawAOS is a practice platform that invoices and takes card payments through the firm's own Stripe account.

LawPay is a payments service for law firms, not a practice management system. Its pricing page lists one plan at $19/month, card processing at 2.99% + $0.30 per transaction for Visa, Mastercard and Discover, and eCheck at 1%. Alternatives are other processors, or a practice system that takes payments on its own invoices.

LawAOS is the second kind with one condition: it does not process payments itself. A firm connects its own Stripe account through Stripe Connect, and clients then pay LawAOS invoices by card on a payment page or in the client portal, under Stripe's terms and fees.

If your practice system already works with LawPay, as LawPay says MyCase and 65+ other legal products do, you may not need to change anything. LawAOS fits a firm moving its whole practice onto one system at $29-$119/user/month; it has no LawPay integration.

LawPay's own pages describe a focused product: card, eCheck and ACH, Apple Pay, QR codes and Pay Later financing, next-day funding, and invoices sent by text or email with payment notifications. Firms look for an alternative when they want invoicing, time, trust ledgers and accounting in the same place as payments.

LawPay's pricing is published in full. Beyond the $19/month plan, American Express, Pay Later and a card-brand pass-through allocation carry their own rates, listed in the table below.

LawPay describes trust-account processing built to keep trust and operating funds apart, and says it is built around ABA and IOLTA rules. LawAOS makes no trust-specific card processing claim: card payments run through the firm's own Stripe account, and the firm should confirm with Stripe and its regulator how trust deposits are handled.

LawPay's own pages also state these strengths.

  • Trust-account-safe card processing built around ABA and IOLTA rules.
  • Transparent published rates and a single $19/month plan.

  • Decide whether you are replacing only the payment processor, or the practice system around it.
  • If you move card payments to Stripe, open and verify the firm's Stripe account before your first LawAOS invoice run.
  • Confirm with your regulator how card payments into a trust account must be handled before you take any.
  • Export your contacts, companies and matters and open the files before you sign anything, so you know which columns you will map.
  • Run a final trust reconciliation in the old system, keep the report, and plan how each client's opening trust balance will be recorded in the new one.
  • Price the whole firm, including add-ons, payment fees, storage and onboarding, not only the entry plan.
  • Run one live matter through the trial end to end: intake, a conflict check, time, an invoice and a trust posting.

  1. Connect the firm's own Stripe account

An owner connects the firm's Stripe account through Stripe Connect and completes Stripe's onboarding. Online card payment is not offered on invoices until that is done, and Stripe's own terms and fees apply.

  2. Build the invoice from the matter

Set the matter's fee arrangement, then build the invoice from approved unbilled time, expenses, the firm's service catalog or manual lines, with one invoice-wide discount and one tax line.

  3. Send it on the firm's letterhead

Send a branded email with the PDF attached, a portal link and a payment link. With the firm's SMTP connected it sends as the firm.

  4. The client pays by card

The client pays on the invoice's payment page, or with the Pay button in the client portal, and receives a receipt by email.

  5. Record, deposit and reconcile

Recorded payments set an invoice to Partial or Paid and post to the general ledger; overpayments become client credit. Deposit batches move Undeposited Funds to the operating bank account.

  6. Keep trust money in the trust ledger

Retainers and other client money are recorded as deposits on the client's trust ledger, where drawdowns are refused beyond the cleared balance.

Stated plainly, so you can decide before you sign up rather than after.

  • LawAOS does not process payments itself: card payment works through Stripe Connect only after the firm connects and onboards its own Stripe account, and there is no manual refund screen.
  • There are no automatic client reminder emails, dunning or late fees; a daily job marks unpaid invoices Overdue and notifies staff, and AI can draft a reminder that a person sends.
  • The Trust Transfer payment method on an invoice is a label only; it does not move trust money, and there is no screen to pay an invoice from trust.
  • LawAOS has no LawPay integration, so a firm that keeps LawPay records those payments against invoices by hand.
  • Moving from LawPay: a general firm-data importer is not yet shipped. The LawAOS Switch importer at Settings > Data imports brings in contacts, companies and matters from Clio, MyCase or PracticePanther exports, or from a CSV, XLSX or ZIP file, with column mapping, duplicate handling and a review step before anything is committed. Documents are uploaded, and time entries, invoices and trust balances are not imported.
