Legal work
For Lawyers, billing reviewers, and administrators

Record costs once and generate a consolidated account of work from connected matter activity.

Use the matter create menu and choose Expense for a cost incurred for that matter. Enter the transaction facts the firm needs: date, category or description, amount and currency, billable treatment, vendor or payee where relevant, and a receipt when available.

The expense should flow into billing and reporting according to its billable status. Do not reproduce it as a manual report line.

Hourly matters use approved billable time and expenses. Flat-fee matters use agreed amounts and, where configured, fee milestones; timers are optional operational evidence, not a billing prerequisite. Contingency and custom arrangements record the governing terms and outcome-based fee inputs. Pro bono or non-billable work can still use tasks, expenses, and internal time where the firm chooses.

The matter's fee arrangement should be the source used by pre-bill and invoice preparation. Avoid changing it casually after billing activity exists.

The matter work report consolidates completed tasks and child tasks, expenses, billing hours where applicable, involved lawyers, fee information, documents and activity available to the report, and the selected reporting period.

Generate a weekly, monthly, or custom-period report for internal billing review or an appropriate client update. Review the generated file before sharing, especially for privileged notes, internal rates, ethical-wall restrictions, and incomplete source records.

  1. Open the matter and choose Report or open its Work Report area.
  2. Select the reporting period and intended audience.
  3. Review included work, expenses, time, people, and fee context.
  4. Generate the file and inspect it.
  5. Share through the authorized matter or portal workflow.
