Platform

Matters, money, people, risk and AI share one record and one set of permissions, so work done in one module is visible in the others.

A legal operating system is software that runs the whole of a law firm's operations on one shared record, rather than a set of separate tools joined by exports. Matters, clients, documents, time, billing, trust money, accounts, people and compliance checks all read and write the same data, under one permission model.

LawAOS works this way. A matter holds its documents, tasks, deadlines, time and invoices; invoices and payments post to the general ledger; trust postings and payroll post there too; conflict checks search the same contacts and matter parties; and the AI assistant acts on those records within the signed-in user's permissions.

The term does not mean a desktop operating system, and LawAOS is not a legal services provider. It is software a firm uses to run its practice; the firm provides the legal work.

One record
A client, a matter or a member exists once. Billing, docketing, HR and compliance refer to that record instead of keeping their own copy.
One permission model
Roles with per-module permissions are checked on the server, attribute-based allow and deny policies refine them, and ethical walls are enforced in the database on matters, documents, invoices, calendar, docket, tasks and conflict search.
Modules that share data
Matters and documents; time, invoicing, trust and accounting; people, payroll and HR; conflicts and AML/KYC; reports and dashboards over all of them.
AI with the same rights as the user
The assistant creates tasks, time entries, invoices and other records only where the person asking is allowed to.

A cost-effective legal operating model usually comes down to how many systems staff must keep in step. Point tools can each be strong at one job, but every handoff between them is an export, a re-key or an integration to maintain. A platform trades some depth in individual areas for fewer handoffs.

The practical test is to list the handoffs in a matter's life: enquiry to conflict check, engagement to matter, time to invoice, payment to ledger, trust receipt to client ledger. Count how many cross a system boundary today.

Switching the whole firm at once is rarely necessary. Many firms start with matters and billing and add trust, HR or compliance modules later, since every module is included on every plan.

The LawAOS Switch importer brings in contacts, companies and matters from Clio, MyCase or PracticePanther exports or a CSV, with column mapping and a review step. Documents are uploaded; time, invoices and trust balances are not imported, and a general firm-data importer is not yet shipped.

  4. Run the people side

Members, leave, policies, payroll and CLE share the same people records.

Stated plainly, so you can decide before you sign up rather than after.

  • LawAOS is software for running a firm; it does not provide legal services or legal advice.
  • A general firm-data importer is not yet shipped: time, invoices and trust balances do not import.
  • There is no QuickBooks or Xero integration, and no Zapier or Slack connection.
  • There are no native iOS or Android apps; LawAOS is a responsive web app that can be installed as a PWA.
